Gitchi-Gami State Trail
2016 Plan Update & Scoping Project

The Gitchi-Gami State Trail Scoping Project provides planning level designs and cost estimates for un-built/un-funded portions of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail. These designs were developed to assist the Gitchi-Gami Trail Association and its partners in providing more detailed information to use when seeking grants and other funding for the Trail’s completion.

The Gitchi-Gami Trail Plan has been revised and updated as a result of this project. The plan is broken into two parts: Part 1: 2013 Gitchi Gami Trail Plan Update, and Part 2: Gitchi Gami Scoping Project.
  • Part 1 of the plan includes information about the 2013 plan update process and has updated text regarding recent, current, and upcoming activities.
  • Part 2 of the plan includes details about the scoping project process, mileage tables, and detailed design maps.
The maps in Part 2 are grouped into three categories: priority segments, long term planned segments, and completed segments. Priority segments were suggested by the MnDNR and GGTA as the most viable upcoming projects.

This report was prepared using Federal funds under award NA14NOS4190055 from NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management, U.S. Department of Commerce. The statements, findings, conclusions, and recommendations are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management, U.S. Department of Commerce or Minnesota DNR.

In addition to Minnesota's Lake Superior Coastal Program, NOAA, and MN DNR, the Gitchi-Gami Scoping project was made possible through time and energy dedicated by personnel at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Division of Parks and Trails, the Gitchi-Gami Trail Association, and the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission.

Visual Representation of Surrounding TextImportant Note:
The document includes maps showing large-scale, very general routing options for each of the segments of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail. These maps are to be used as a reference for long-term planning purposes and do not reflect indication of official construction plans for incomplete sections of the trail. All routes are likely to change when implemented due to on-the-ground engineering and public input.

The numbers on each map correspond to the segment number. The segments begin numbering in the southwest and continue northeast. Segment No. 1 starts in Two Harbors, and segment No. 30 ends in
Grand Marais. The numbering of the segments do not
indicate priority ranking in any way.
